Chandon has been honoured with international success at the 2016 Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC), taking out the national trophy for Best Australian Sparkling Wine for Chandon Prestige Cuvée 2005.
Launched by the Champagne and sparkling wine writer and author Tom Stevenson, with the support and expertise of Essi Avellan MW and Dr Tony Jordan, the CSWWC is the first and only terroir-driven competition judged exclusively by internationally renowned Champagne & sparkling wine experts.
Alongside some of Australia’s most highly regarded sparkling producers, it was the Yarra Valley winery’s premier sparkling and Cellar Door exclusive, Chandon Prestige Cuvée 2005, which came out on top. In addition to the trophy-winning wine, the CSWWC also awarded gold medals to Chandon Blanc de Blancs 2012 and Chandon Vintage Brut 2012. A thrilled Dan Buckle, Chandon Senior Winemaker, commented:
“This is a very exciting result which comes at the perfect time as we celebrate our thirtieth year making wine. It recognises an aspiration which began 30 years ago – to take beautiful, cool-climate vineyards and make a uniquely Australian expression of the highest possible quality.”
With 22% more entries than last year and producers competing from no less than 26 countries, the CSWWC is the largest and most relevant sparkling wine competition in the world. All wines entered into the CSWWC are judged blind and evaluated strictly within the context of their origin and style.
Commenting on the Australian entries overall, Stevenson said: “Australia is the Steady Eddie of the CSWWC, with 9 Gold medals in 2015 and 9 this year. It was gratifying to see Domaine Chandon so successfully throw its hat in the ring this year.”
Chandon Prestige Cuvée 2005 is a selection of the finest parcels of fruit from the 2005 vintage, with almost 10 years ageing on its yeast. This rare wine is a persuasive expression of an outstanding vintage and is available exclusively via the Domaine Chandon Cellar Door ($89.00 firstname.lastname@example.org or (03) 9738 9200).
