TERROIR IS A STORY OF PLACE

No matter where you love to get outdoors, something about a place stays with you — a sense of something that lingers. A salty breeze by the ocean, the crisp air atop your favourite mountain, or the coarse, well-worn path that winds its way to a forest picnic spot. In winemaking terms this essence of place is referred to as "Terroir" (ter-wahr). It embodies the distinctive essence of the landscape mirrored in the wine, expressing the flavours infused into the grapes by the surrounding environment.

The terroir of each Chandon sparkling tells its story of nature and nurture, of the soil from which it grew and the hands that guided it. The wines from each of our vineyards in the Yarra Valley, Strathbogie Ranges and Whitlands Plateau express the characteristics of place. Nuances in flavour reflect the climate, soil and elevation in which the grapes were grown. While terroir emphasises natural factors, human influence also plays an integral part. From selecting the right grape varieties for each parcel of land to sustainable farming practices and innovative winemaking techniques – every decision made by our team at CHANDON reflects our commitment to expressing an authentic sense of terroir.

Yarra Valley

Our home vineyard in the centre of the Yarra Valley is known locally as 'Green Point', sitting on a spur of land that remains green longer into summer than any other area in the Valley. With East facing slopes and sandy clay loam soils the potential for grape growing was clear when it was established in 1987. Here our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier vines benefit from long, warm days and cool nights. This diurnal temperature variation allows grapes to develop vibrant flavors while retaining the acidity necessary for fresh, balanced sparkling wines. With some of the best views in the country, it was the perfect location for our cellar door.

Strathbogie Ranges

This remote vineyard up in the hills of the Strathbogie Ranges in central Victoria is littered with granite boulders, exposed through millions of years of erosion and making for some spectacular scenery. An elevation of 650m brings bracingly cold nights, and grapes ripen slowly and late in the season. The resulting base wines are elegant and refined, with exceptional natural acidity. Granitic clay loam soil allows free drainage for the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier vines that cling to the ground in this windswept region.

Whitlands Plateau

Perched on one of the most elevated viticultural locations in the country in the Victorian alpine region, our Whitlands Plateau vineyard is one of the highest and coolest in Australia. At 850m elevation and with rich volcanic soils, it consistently produces award-winning sparkling wines of exceptional quality with intense flavour and bright natural acidity. In addition to the usual Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier we also grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Petite Meslier, giving us six of the seven permitted Champagne grape varieties. The diversity in these grape varieties provides a foundation for innovation, allowing our winemakers to craft exceptional Australian sparkling wine.
